Palenque

After our visit to San Cristobal de las Casas and the Chiapas indigenous communities, we travel to the archeological site of Palenque. The site of Palenque was abandoned by the Maya when the Spanish explorers arrived in Chiapas in the 16th century. Palenque is the most studied and written about of the Maya sites evokes more affection in visitors than any other Mesoamerican ruin. It was interesting to learn that only 10 to 15% of the structures are discovered. The vast majority of this site is still buried in private property.
