San Juan Chamula and Zinacantan

Just six miles from San Cristobal de las Casas are the indigenous communities of San Juan Chamula and the neighboring Zinacantan. To reach them you can take a very cheap taxi ride or better yet travel with the locals through public transportation. The magic of the area are its people. This is a land that has not changed for many years. You do see some todays technologies like cell phone use and “Internet Café” every once in a while but the overall feel is that of a peaceful existence where men work the land and the land gives them everything.
The one amazing spectacle of San Juan Chamula was the church. I only wish I was able to photograph the inside but photography was strictly prohibited. I carried my cameras at plain sight and always felt like someone was watching they were off at all times.

This is a good article about the church
